B2 Stage 5: Short essay
Write clear body paragraphs
How to write essay body paragraphs
You can write body paragraphs that each have one main idea, explained and supported, and linked to each other.
This guide is for B1 writers moving to B2. It is a stage 5 skill: write a short essay (4 paragraphs) (140-220 words).
When to use essay body paragraphs
In the middle of every essay. Plan your body paragraphs before you write: one idea for each.
Essay body paragraphs: how to do it
Each body paragraph has ONE main idea. Start it with a sentence that says that idea (a topic sentence), then explain it with a reason and add an example. Do not mix two ideas in one paragraph, and do not repeat an idea in two paragraphs. Link the paragraphs: start the second one with a word or phrase that connects it to the first (Another reason is that ..., In addition, However, ...). Keep coming back to your view.
Useful language for essay body paragraphs
- The first reason is that ...
- Another important point is that ...
- For example, ...
- As a result, ...
- On the other hand, ...

Example of essay body paragraphs
Many young adults ask themselves whether to rent a flat or to buy one. In my view, buying is the better choice for most people, because it gives security and can save money in the long run. The first reason is that buying gives security. A person who owns a flat cannot be told to leave by a landlord, so they can plan their life with confidence. For example, a family with two children can stay near the same school for many years instead of moving each time a contract ends. Another reason is that buying can cost less over time. Rent is money that never comes back, whereas the money paid for a flat slowly becomes something the owner keeps. After some years, a buyer may even pay less each month than a tenant in the same area. For these reasons, buying is usually the sensible option for people who plan to stay in one place. Renting is still better for those who may change jobs soon.
