B2 Stage 2: Linked sentences
Add a point or show a contrast
Adding a point and showing contrast: moreover, however
You can show how your sentences connect, with linking words like In addition, However and On the other hand.
This guide is for B1 writers moving to B2. It is a stage 2 skill: write 2-3 sentences (20-70 words).
When to use adding and contrasting
When your next sentence adds another point or goes the other way. Use the contrast words when you show two sides, and the adding words when you build up reasons.
Adding and contrasting: how to do it
Linking words show how one sentence connects to the next. To add a point: In addition, Moreover, Furthermore. To show a contrast: However, On the other hand, In contrast. Check that the word matches the idea: after an advantage, 'However' brings a problem, and 'In addition' brings another advantage. Put a full stop before the linking word and a comma after it: 'Electric scooters are cheap. However, they can be dangerous on busy pavements.' Do not join two sentences with only a comma and 'however'.
