When you explain why something happens or what a change will lead to. It fits topics about money, health, work, cities and the environment.
Cause and result: how to do it
Show the steps: A causes B, and B then causes C. 'Because of the high prices, many families cook at home. As a result, restaurants have fewer customers, which means that some of them close.' Use different linking words: because of + a noun (because of the traffic), because + a full sentence, As a result, This means that, leads to + a noun (leads to stress), so. Check that each step really follows from the one before. After each step ask yourself: 'and then what happens?' Be exact: 'it has an impact on people' says nothing; 'people sleep less' does.
