B2 Stage 1: Sentence
Give your opinion and a reason
Giving your opinion and a reason in English writing
You can give a clear opinion and the reason for it in one sentence, without starting with 'you think'.
This guide is for B1 writers moving to B2. It is a stage 1 skill: write one sentence (8-40 words).
When to use an opinion and a reason
Every time you are asked what you think. Use it for the first sentence of an answer, or whenever you say what you believe.
An opinion and a reason: how to do it
Say what you think directly: 'Phones should not be used at the dinner table.' You do not need 'I think' every time. Other ways to start: In my view, ..., I am convinced that ..., It seems to me that ..., I would argue that ... Then give a reason that explains WHY, not the same opinion again. 'Phones are bad because they are not good' says nothing new. 'Phones should not be used at the dinner table because meals are the best time to talk' is a real reason. Join the two parts with because, as or since.
Useful language for an opinion and a reason
- In my view, ...
- From my point of view, ...
- I am convinced that ...
- It seems to me that ...
- I would argue that ...
- ..., since ...
Example of an opinion and a reason
In my view, cyclists should always wear helmets, because even a slow fall can cause a serious head injury.
