Explain a problem and suggest a solution

Problem and solution paragraphs for B2

You can explain a problem and why it happens, suggest a solution, and say how it would help.

This guide is for B1 writers moving to B2. It is a stage 3 skill: write one short paragraph (60-110 words).

When to use a problem and solution paragraph

When you are asked to write about a problem and what to do about it. It also works for your own plans, for example a change you want at school or work.

A problem and solution paragraph: how to do it

Use four steps: say what the problem is and who it hurts, say why it happens, suggest one solution that deals with the cause, and say how it would help. Be exact: not 'Litter is a problem' but 'Litter spoils the grass in the park, so children cannot play there safely.' A solution should match the cause: if the cause is cars, the solution is about cars. End with the result: 'If ..., ... would ...'.

Useful language for a problem and solution paragraph

Example of a problem and solution paragraph

Crowded buses are a daily problem for commuters, because many passengers have to stand and arrive tired. This happens because most people start work at about the same time, so the buses fill up together. One solution is for employers to allow flexible start times. If workers could start at seven or ten, the same buses would carry fewer passengers at once. As a result, people would find a seat more easily and start the day calmer.
