B2 Stage 3: Short paragraph
Give advantages and disadvantages
Advantages and disadvantages paragraphs
You can explain an advantage and a disadvantage of something and say which matters more.
This guide is for B1 writers moving to B2. It is a stage 3 skill: write one short paragraph (60-110 words).
When to use advantages and disadvantages
When you are asked about the good and bad sides of a choice, a change or a situation, and when you must say what you think about it.
Advantages and disadvantages: how to do it
Explain one advantage and one disadvantage, and give a reason for each: say who is helped or hurt, and how. Use signal words so the reader can follow: 'One advantage is that ...', 'On the other hand, ...', 'A disadvantage is that ...'. Then finish with your judgement: which side matters more, and why. 'Both sides have good and bad points' is not a judgement. 'Overall, the flexibility matters more, because most learners can fix a lack of focus with a good routine' is. Be fair to both sides.
Useful language for advantages and disadvantages
- One advantage of ... is ...
- A major drawback is that ...
- On the other hand, ...
- Although ..., ...
- Overall, ...
- ... outweigh ...
Example of advantages and disadvantages
Studying online has clear benefits and drawbacks. One advantage is that students can learn from home, which saves them the time and money they would spend on travelling. On the other hand, it is harder to stay focused without a teacher in the room, because it is easy to open another tab or answer a message. Overall, the problem of focus matters more, because students who cannot concentrate learn very little, however much time they save.
