B2 Stage 4: Full paragraph
Mention the other view, then answer it
Mentioning the other view and answering it
You can give the opposite view fairly and then explain why your view is still stronger.
This guide is for B1 writers moving to B2. It is a stage 4 skill: write one full paragraph (110-170 words).
When to use the other view
When you give an opinion on something that people see in different ways. It makes your opinion stronger, because the reader sees that you have thought about the other side.
The other view: how to do it
Good writers show that they know the other side. First give your view. Then say what people on the other side think, and why: 'Some people argue that ...'. Be fair: use their best reason, not a silly one. Then answer it with a reason of your own: 'However, ... because ...'. End by coming back to your view. 'But they are wrong' is not an answer; a reason is.
Useful language for the other view
- Some people argue that ...
- Others believe that ...
- It is true that ..., but ...
- However, ...
- Despite this, ...
- On the other hand, ...
Example of the other view
Shops should keep some staffed tills, even if self-service checkouts are cheaper to run. Some people argue that the machines are better for customers, because they are quick and there are fewer queues at busy times. It is true that a customer with only two or three items can finish in a minute. However, this advantage is small for people who need help. An elderly customer, for example, may not know how to scan an item and may feel embarrassed in front of a queue, while a cashier can solve the problem calmly. In addition, if all the tills disappear, shops will employ fewer people. For these reasons, self-service checkouts are useful, but they should not replace staff completely.
